I will be starting graduate school in which I will be receiving a stipend. The monthly payments are exempt from FICA due to the way the school does the payrolls. Furthermore, I must tell the school how much to withhold. I call this taxable income A
On the side, I have a remote side job at an employer in a different state, and I will be paying the regular slew of payroll taxes on income earned there. I call this taxable income B
Could it be that because of my side income, my school stipend will be FICA taxed? Could the school find out that I am on the payroll at another company? If I understand correctly, taxable income A is FICA exempt while taxable income B is not FICA exempt, so I only pay FICA taxes on B but not A.
But is there anyway the two payroll departments will find out I’m on each others’ payrolls? I’m technically not allowed by the school to have another job.
