Partner and I make 148k gross (me- 55k, him- 93k). One thing to note is we both work entirely from home, so a comfortable home office space is especially important to us.
He’s a software engineer(2+ years at his company) and I do customer support for a booming tech start up, although just started my job last week. Lots of upward mobility for us, even still.
We are also homebodies, so our travel and transportation expenses are lower than average. We also have no “subscription services”. We spend $100/month on internet due to us needing business level connectivity.
I have no debt and own my car, partner is paying on a 0% 3 year car loan (financed 21k) but has no other debts.
15k in joint housing account
10k in my personal emergency savings, 20k in his personal emergency savings.
We’ve been living in a dingy 600 sq ft 1 bedroom for 1100 a month and my productivity at my job has been slipping. I’m literally working in a corner of our bedroom.
We’ve also been having issues with a chain smoking neighbor/constant smoke smells in our apartment and our lease is up soon so we have been seriously considering a new place in a new luxury complex which would be 2300-2600 where we live for a brand new 2 bedroom (we each take a room for our offices and put the bed in the main space). No utilities included.
We are typically pretty cautious about finances but realize that creature comforts are especially important to us considering our WFH situations.
Question: We are trying to save for a 250-300k home in the future, what would be outrageous to spend on rent at our income and debt levels?
